our story
MOTON STUDIO WAS FOUNDED BY COUPLE AND CREATIVE DUO MOLLY GANGEL & MALCOLM DICKSON.
The creative duo met whilst studying Art at the same college in Ayr. Neither could have imagined that over a decade later, they would be joining forces to create Moton Studio. A project that would distil both creative outputs in to one dynamic range of handcrafted lighting and homeware.
Malcolm studied as a portrait painter and printmaker before an eclectic mix of job roles from scene painter to stage builder. With years of manufacturing experience gaining him his skills in woodcraft, this combined with his natural abilities in design leads to the striking look of Moton products. Out of his creative chaos comes and endless stream of ideas and products.
Molly studied Art Glass Design at City of Glasgow College after learning the centuries old trade from her mother. This introduction to Stained Glass and the Tiffany technique has led her to being the glass designer and maker for Moton Studio. After years spent working in the bars and restaurants of Glasgow and doing the odd glass commission for friends and family, she decided it was time to commit to her practice fully and form a creative partnership with Malcolm.
Their collections draw inspiration from a broad and eclectic mix of influences. You can find everything from retro-futuristic lamps inspired by the mid-century space-race, to selective raw colour palettes which take influence from the colourists of the Bauhaus movement.
“As designers and makers, we have very different taste and styles. A few things we share common ground on is a love of bold colour and organic shapes, for example, geometry is an endless source of design inspiration for us both. But as far as people go, we’re pretty much polar opposites. I think it makes for the best team though, we end up making things which neither of us would think of or do alone.”
